Cash Discounts at Gas Pumps
The trend recently has been for credit card companies to reward consumers for using plastic at the pump with discounts through gas rewards. Now, the Connecticut government may be instituting a different kind of reward - for using cash.
Connecticut is considering legislation to allow gas stations to give discounts to consumers paying cash - despite their franchise agreements with the oil companies that require that the same gas price be charged whether the consumer is purchasing with cash or credit. The estimate of savings for consumers who choose to pay with cash instead of credit is between 10 and 20 cents a gallon. At the time that I checked it, 85% of Hartford Courant readers voted in favor of allowing gas stations to charge different prices in an online poll. Read more about it here.
