Government Regulation of Website Security?
The recent hacking of the Oregon State University bookstore (reported here) has me wondering whether there is government regulation of websites which store the credit card numbers of users. Through several Google searches, I couldn’t find any references to government regulation of this important area in the fight against identity theft. What law or regulation am I missing?
If the best advice that the police can offer after identity theft has occured is to watch your financial statements for unusual transactions, then one has to wonder what protections are in place for website users.
